Developed in the 1980s by Japanese artist Maeno Setsu. The artform was designed to recycle and repurpose old, unwanted silk kimono fabrics. This artform is rooted in the traditional Japanese art of Kimekomi dolls, where fabric istucked into wooden dolls. It embodies the Japanese aestheticof Wabi-Sabi (appreciating imperfection and transience) anda culture of resourcefulness by creating art from scraps.
